Acapulco, affectionately called the Queen of the Mexican Riviera, is located in the Mexican state of Guerrero, about 230 miles south of Mexico City on Mexico's southwest Pacific Coast. It is bordered by the spectacular Acapulco Bay to the west, and by the majestic Sierra Madre mountains to the east. The town has a population of about 1.5 million residents.

Acapulco was founded by the Nahua Indians around 3000 B.C. The town was later conquered by the Spaniards in the early 1500's. For several centuries thereafter, the town was operated by the Spaniards as a thriving seaport.

Acapulco did not become a major vacation destination until the 1920s, when the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VIII) visited the area on a fishing excursion and brought the town to world attention. In subsequent decades, world celebrities and jet-setters flocked to Acapulco and tourism increased dramatically. Today, this resort town is one Mexico's top vacation destinations, attracting some 3.5 million visitors annually.

The climate in Acapulco is tropical, with sunshine averaging about 360 days a year. From January through April, average daily temperatures range from a high of 88 degrees Fahrenheit to a low of 72 degrees Fahrenheit. From May through December, average daily temperatures fluctuate from a high of 90 degrees Fahrenheit to a low of 76 degrees Fahrenheit. While there are occasional tropical showers, these are generally of brief duration and usually occur at night.
